Common English walnut: Our English walnut seedlings are grown from seeds taken from the best local trees that exhibit mid/late leafing and flowering, self or partially self fertility, with good yields of mid-large size nuts. 60-70% of seedlings seem to leaf up the 3rd week of April so avoiding flower damaging late frosts most years. Size of nuts, fertility and yield can't be predicted though. Due to free pollination, the trees could take various characteristics from the parent trees.Generally common walnuts will be larger trees (but not always the case) , likely to be vigorous trees and will take longer to bear fruit than a grafted variety, due to being grown directly from seed rather than cloned from material taken from an already mature tree . The size of nut of individual trees can not be specified, also fertility is less predictable than grafted walnuts where characteristics are known. It is not possible either to guarantee that the tree will be self-fertile.......but they are a naturally selected unique specimen and can still be pollinised from trees up to half a mile away.
